When most people hear the words “windshield repair” they think
of windshield replacement. When a rock or other object hits the
windshield and causes minor damage, it doesn’t need to be replaced.
A windshield consists of three layers, a middle layer of plastic bonded
to two outer layers of glass. At the point of the impact, the damage is
generally confined to the outer layer of glass. When debris strikes a
windshield both a weak spot and an air space are created in the outer
layer. Once the structural integrity is compromised, the windshield
becomes extremely vulnerable. Any variation in temperature or stress
can result in the damage spreading from the initial point of impact.
Instead of replacing a stone damaged windshield, it is repaired by
injecting an optically clear structural adhesive into the damaged area.
When the damaged area is completely filled, the adhesive is permanently
cured with exposure to a special Ultra Violet light. The process takes
between 10 and 15 minutes. Windshield repairs done by a professional
windshield repair technician will permanently stop the damage from
growing, restore the original strength and greatly reduce the visual
distortion to a slight blemish. The glass is never removed so you keep
the original factory seal.
